Professor Marc Achen
Dr Achen, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Laboratory Head at the Melbourne Branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and a Principal Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. He received his Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of Melbourne, majoring in Biochemistry and Genetics, and carried out postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology (Martinsried, Germany) between 1991 and 1994. He joined the Ludwig Institute in 1995. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that control growth of lymphatic vessels and blood vessels in tumours, lymphoedema and other pathologies.

Professor Mauro Andrade
Dr Andrade was born in São Paulo and graduated in Medicine in 1984 at the University of São Paulo. He was a resident General and Vascular Surgery (Clinics Hospital, University of São Paulo) from 1985 to 1989. He gained a PhD. in Surgery in 1998 studying Lymphatic Physiopathology. Currently he is Professor of the Department of Surgery (Postgraduate Program), University of São Paulo. He was founder and current President of the Brazilian Society of Lymphology and joined the International Society of Lymphology in 1993 and elected President for the term 2005-2007.

Professor Jane Armer
Dr Armer is professor at MU Sinclair School of Nursing and Director of Research at Ellis Fischel Cancer Centre. She serves on the Medical Advisory Committee of the National Lymphoedema Network and chairs its Research Committee. She is a Director of the Lymphoedema Association of North America. She has been appointed to the Nursing Core group of Cancer and Leukaemia Group B - the national medical oncology clinical trials research group. She is known for her research on physiological measurement of limb volume in post-breast cancer lymphoedema; signs, symptoms and self-management of lymphoedema and on the psychological impact of lymphoedema.

Professor Francesco Boccardo
Dr Boccardo is currently President of the International Society of Lymphology (ISL). He was born in Genoa and Graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Genoa and undertook his Post-graduate studies in General and Vascular Surgery and Trauma at the University of Genoa. He undertook his PhD in Experimental Surgery and Microsurgery by the University of Pavia. Francesco was previously Assistant Professor of General Surgery in the Department of Surgery, University of Genoa and is currently Professor of General Surgery and Microsurgery at the University School of Genoa.

Dr Robyn Box
Dr Box has more than 20 years experience working in the area of Oncology. Her clinical and research interests are, physiotherapy rehabilitation after breast cancer surgery; assessment for early detection of limb Lymphoedema and determination of the efficacy of treatment interventions to prevent and minimise secondary limb lymphoedema. Committed to evidence-based best practice to optimise patient outcomes, she has published widely, has presented at National and International conferences and provides education for health professionals at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She works in private practice in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and is a part-time Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland.

Dr Håkan Brorson
Mr Håkan Brorson, MD, PhD is senior consultant plastic surgeon at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Malmö University Hospital, Lund University, Malmö, Sweden. His Doctoral thesis was titled: Liposuction and Controlled Compression Therapy in the Treatment of Arm Lymphedema following Breast Cancer.His research is focused on the formation of adipose tissue in lymphoedema using CT, MRI and Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry for gross anatomy,
and micro-array and RT-PCR for genetic studies. He has also published papers focusing on Laser Doppler Imaging, lymphoscintigraphy and Quality of Life. He is editor of the Swedish National Lymphedema Treatment Program. He has trained teams from Denmark, USA, Netherlands, Scotland, Switzerland and Australia to treat lymphedema with liposuction. He is President of the 23rd International Society of
Lymphology Congress.

Professor Corradino Campisi
Professor Campisi Graduated in Medicine and Surgery specializing in three areas of vascular, general and emergency surgery. He is Chief of the Operative Unit of “Lymphatic Surgery” at the University Hospital, Genoa. He has authored more than 600 scientific publications, 5 monographs and many textbook chapters. He is currently President of the Italian Society of Lymphangiology, and the Latin-Mediterranean Chapter of the ISL. He was president of the International Society of Lymphology (ISL) between 1995 and 1997 and the European Group of Lymphology. He has been co-editor of Lymphology, and Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Lymphology. He will be president of the European Federation of Societies for Microsurgery between 2008 and 2010.

Dr Evangelos Dimakakos
Evangelos undertook his medical degree in Athens and later specialities in internal medicine in Greece, in lymphoedema therapy Germany (with Prof Foeldi),and Vascular medicine. Following this he received his PhD in Athens. Presently Evangelos is the head of the lymphology unit at the angio-medicine center for vascular diseases in Athens. He has published over 35 articles in lymphology and related areas and is the founder of the Greek Society for Lymphology.

Professor Ethel Foeldi
Prof Dr med Etelka Foeldi has been an assistant physician and Department Head at the Medical University
Clinic Szeged, Hungary, Head of the Department of Experimental Medicine within the clinical research department at Schaper & Brümmer, Germany and assistant physician at the Medical Clinic of Hildesheim, a senior physician of the internal department of the St. Elisabeth Hospital in Salzgitter-Bad and recently Medical superintendent of the Földi Clinic, Medical Centre for Lymphoedema Treatment, Hinterzarten, Germany.

Professor Peter Franks
Professor Franks is Co-director of the Centre for Research and Implementation of Clinical Practice (CRICP). He recently left his post as Professor of Health Sciences at Thames Valley University, to concentrate on the research which underpins the charity’s work. His main work interests are leg ulceration, tissue viability and recently lymphoedema. He is a co-author of a range of research projects in epidemiology and service development in lymphoedema. He was a co-applicant to the UK Kings Fund to develop evidence based services in lymphoedema to the population in South west London. This is now being rolled out on a national and international basis through the International Lymphoedema Framework Project.

Dr Sandi Hayes
Dr Hayes has extensive research experience in public health-related, prospective, population-based projects to advance understanding of the incidence of secondary lymphoedema, as well as its risk and protective factors among women with breast cancer. She also has conducted randomised controlled trials involving women with lymphoedema following breast cancer to evaluate physical activity approaches to controlling/treating the condition. She recently undertook an evidence-based review for the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre, on the incidence, risk factors, prevention and treatment of lymphoedema following cancer.

Dr Natasha Harvey
Dr Harvey is group leader of the Lymphatic Development Laboratory at The Hanson Institute in Adelaide, South Australia. The focus of research in the Lymphatic Development Laboratory is to delineate the mechanisms by which the lymphatic vasculature is constructed during embryogenesis in the mouse, an area of research critical to facilitate the generation of new treatments for lymphoedema, inflammatory diseases and cancer.

Dr Vaughan Keeley
Vaughan Keeley has been a Consultant in Palliative Medicine in Derby since 1989. He developed an interest in lymphoedema before then and set up the service in Derby in 1990. The service treats patients with all types of chronic oedema, including that in children. He works with a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. He has recently commenced a new lymphoedema service in Nottingham. He is currently Chair of the British Lymphology Society Research Advisory Board. His research interests include the measurement of quality of life in lymphoedema, and the epidemiology of chronic oedema.

Professor Stanley Leong
Dr Leong is Professor of Surgery at University of California, San Francisco and a member of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Centre. He was a member of the Arizona Cancer Centre from 1986-1991 and was recruited to UCSF as an Associate Professor of Surgery in 1991 and was promoted to Professor of Surgery in 1997. He is the director of the sentinel lymph node program at UCSF. Prof Leong has published over 110 peer-reviewed articles, 34 chapters and 12 books. He currently researches cancer metastasis, sentinel node biology and cancer immunology.

Dr Mark Malouf
Dr Malouf is a medical graduate of The University of Sydney, 1976 and has Australasian and English surgical fellowships. His interest in phlebology and lymphoedema was stimulated during clinical and research work at St Mary’s Hospital, London, under the direction of Prof. A Nicolaides and Mr J Hobbs. He has a purely venous/lymphoedema practice in Sydney, with special interest in varicose veins surgery, sclerotherapy, venous thrombosis, the management of leg ulceration and legs affected by lymphoedema and chronic venous hypertension.

Professor Christine Moffatt
Professor Moffatt is Professor of Nursing at Glasgow Medical School, Nursing and health care faculty. She has been involved in lymphoedema for nine years and has undertaken epidemiology and more recently has directed the International Lymphoedema Framework. She received a CBE form the Queen in 2006.

Professor Moriya Ohkuma
Prof Ohkuma is a past president of the International Society of Lymphology. He is one of the executive committee members of the Japanese Society for Wakanyaku (Oriental Medicine). His main interest is treatment of lymphoedema using combinations of oral Oriental drugs.

Professor Osamu Ohtani
Prof Ohtani was born in Okayama Prefecture in Japan. Immediately after graduation from Postgraduate School of Medicine of Okayama University in 1979, began to work as an assistant professor of Department of Anatomy. From 1981 to 1982, enjoyed nature and wine in Australia while living in Adelaide working in the Department of Human Morphology, Flinders University. In 1990, Dr Ohtani was promoted to Professor of Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Toyama University. He currently teaches gross anatomy to medical students and his lifework is to unravel mysteries of blood and lymphatic vessels.

Dr Kurosh Parsi
Dr Kurosh Parsi, FACD, FACP is a dermatologist and phlebologist. Dr Parsi is a medical graduate of the University of Sydney. He obtained his Master of Science in Medicine degree from the University of NSW. Dr Parsi’s research interests have included Traveler’s Thrombosis, thrombophilia, antithrombotic and lytic effects of sclerosing agents, and pigmented purpuric dermatoses. Dr Parsi’s clinical interests include endovenous laser therapy, ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, management of vascular malformations, and thromboembolic disorders. He is the founding editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Phlebology. Positions held include President, Australasian College of Phlebology, VMO, St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney; Staff Specialist, Sydney Children’s Hospital; Conjoint Senior Lecturer, UNSW.

Professor Alain Paul Pecking
Dr Pecking (MD) is Associate Director of the René Huguenin comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the 20 cancer institutes in France. He received his MD in 1974 from the University of Paris, majoring in Oncology and Nuclear medicine. He joined the French federation of cancer institutes in 1979 and became the chief of the nuclear medicine department in 1987. His research focuses on molecular imaging and particularly on fusion of anatomical and functional imaging in oncology and in lymphology. He joined the ISL in 1981.

Professor Stanley Rockson
Professor Stanley Rockson is the Allan & Tina Neill Professor of Lymphatic Research and Medicine in Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University. He is the Chief of Consultative Cardiology and the Director of its center for Lymphatic and Venous Disorders. He is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Cardiology, Physicians, and Angiology and of the Society of Vascular Medicine and Biology. Prof Rockson is the Chair of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board of the Lymphatic Research Foundation and is a consultant on lymphatic research matters to the NIH. He has been involved in trials researching many aspects of cardiovascular medicine, including basic and clinical investigation in the fields of angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis Prof Rockson is Editor-in-Chief of Lymphatic Research and Biology and sits on the editorial board of Angiology.

Professor Owen Ung
Professor Ung is a breast and endocrine surgeon. He has worked in rural and metropolitan hospitals throughout NSW. He then took a position as lecturer in Surgery at the University of Wales in the UK. Until 2008 he was a consultant surgeon at Westmead hospital where he headed the Breast and Endocrine surgical unit. He then obtained a Clinical Associate Professorship with the University of Sydney then returned to Queensland to head the Breast and Endocrine unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. He is a committed clinician, researcher and teacher and lectures and publishes widely. Through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he plays an active role in surgical training, assessment and examination.

Professor Marlys Witte
Dr Witte is Professor of Surgery at the University of Arizona and attending physician at University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. With her late husband Charles, she established the University of Arizona Lymphology Laboratories in 1969 and soon after the Comprehensive Lymphedema-Angiodysplasia Diagnostic and Treatment Center at the Arizona Health Sciences Center/HealthSouth Rehabilitation Institute of Tucson. She is past President and current Secretary General of the ISL as well as serving as Editor of Lymphology. She also directs the NIH-sponsored Student Research Programs and the Curriculum on Medical Ignorance at the University of Arizona. Her research spans the translational spectrum of lymphology from molecules to man.
